NaBloPoMo!!

Okay, let's assume you already know what NaNoWriMo is. (Here's the link, if not.) I participated last year (and failed miserably, but had a fantastic time).

This year... because I already recognize how completely swamped I am... I'm going to attempt an alternative: National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo).

The idea: I'm going to post here, once every day in November. Even the weekend days.

The reality: That's not going to happen. But I can try... ;)

How you can help: If you read this, send me links! Youth stuff! Mom stuff! Marketing stuff! YouTube videos! Random unrelated stuff that I can use as filler!

Or... just wish me luck? WonderGroup AWAY!

Why does this exist? Thanks for nothing, K.

Plight of the Tree Octopus

This link comes from my brother. It's a couple of months old, but I think it's fantastic. I don't really want to ruin the story for you, so click to read about the Pacific Northwest tree octopus.

Basically (and here's where I ruin it, if you're peeking): the tree octopus is fictional, and is being used as a tool to teach school kids how to spot fake websites. Delightful!
The project’s goal is to improve how adolescents are taught today’s new literacies, including parsing search-engine results, critically evaluating online content, interpreting hyperlinks and communicating effectively by e-mail.
Ideally, you'd now scamper away to (re-)read the article... but if not, let me share the best line with you:
When students e-mail to ask if the tree octopus is real, [tree octopus creator] Zapato writes back, “They are as real as the sasquatch that prey upon them.”

PostSecret Community

For the past several years, PostSecret.com has been sucking people in. A lot of the emotion and power comes from the anonymity of the site-- after all, it's a site about secrets.

With that in mind, I was very curious to see what PostSecret's new "community" would look like. I'm glad to see that in some sections, the same veiled, mysterious feeling prevails... for instance, in the Voices section, where you can listen to recorded secrets by anonymous authors.

However, the site also gives some readers what they've been craving since the beginning: a way to interact. The Chat section is nothing more than a traditional web forum setup, but it satisfies a need that PostSecret readers have been fulfilling in other places.

Check out the community, tell me what you think...
